Baseball drops opener at No. 6 Tennessee Wesleyan

ATHENS, Tenn. (March 29, 2019) â€" Despite an early lead and scoring six runs against one of the top-ranked teams in the country, Milligan College's baseball team lost the opener of a three-game Appalachian Athletic Conference series to No. 6 Tennessee Wesleyan University, 9-6, Friday evening on the road.
 
The loss moved Milligan to 10-15 (4-9 AAC), although the Buffaloes have still won six of their last nine games. Tennessee Wesleyan improved to 28-6 (8-4 AAC) with its seventh straight win.
 
Juan Vasquez went 3-for-4 with three RBI's and a two-run homer in the eighth which gave Milligan a little bit of late life. Chayse Frye also went 3-for-4 as one of two other Buffs with multiple hits.
 
Milligan took the lead in the top of the first inning on a Chance Hall RBI single, but Tennessee Wesleyan responded with four runs in the bottom half and led the rest of the way. Vasquez doubled home a run in the third as Milligan cut it to 4-3 but Wesleyan again responded an inning later with three runs to surge back into a big lead.
 
Conor Cotton made the start but went only the first inning. Jack Bembry threw three innings of relief before Will Queen threw four.
 
Milligan and Tennessee Wesleyan finish the series with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. The next home game for the Buffs is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3, at 4 p.m. against Hiwassee College.
