MILLIGAN, Tenn. – Milligan University's women's soccer team hosted the Union Commonwealth Bulldogs at Anglin Field Saturday afternoon. The Buffs (9-3-2, 8-2-1 AAC) were plagued by injury coming into the match. Despite being shorthanded, Milligan took control of the match from opening kick and cruised to a decisive 3-0 victory.
It was a dominating opening 45 minutes for the Buffs, as they started their attack early with three shots in the first 10 minutes of the game. In the 14th minute
Lauren Hawkley gathered the ball after a deflection and dribbled into the attacking half, she then sent a cross to
Diane Maillis who was fouled in the box.
Natalie Roper capitalized on the penalty kick to give the Buffs the lead early. It was another Hawkley to Maillis connection that put the second the tally on the board for MU. The Buffs kept the pressure on the Bulldog defense for the remainder of the period but were unable to get another goal across and went into the second half with a 2-0 lead. Milligan held a significant advantage in the shot department with 14 compared to Union Commonwealth's two.
The second half was similar to the first, with Milligan controlling the ball and attacking the UCU goalie. The goalie for the Bulldogs saved multiple MU attempts, until the 58th minute when
Kelsey Miller found
Katelyn Penner for a goal to extend the Buffs' lead to 3-0. Milligan attempted to score a fourth time for the remainder of the game but were unable to, making the final score 3-0.
Overall, Milligan held a 19-10 shot lead and a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal. Three Buffaloes tallied shots on the goal in Penner, Hawkley, and Roper, while Maillis added one.
Mia Brown picked up her first win of the season between the pipes, saving all three shots she faced and her record is now 1-0.
The Buffaloes will be back home tomorrow for a rescheduled game with Truett McConnell (Ga.) at 12 p.m. on Anglin Field. This will mark the final home game for the Buffs as their last remaining contest is on the road.
