LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — The Milligan University women's soccer team traveled to Lawrenceville, Ga., on Saturday for a non-conference matchup with Grizzlies of Georgia Gwinnett College. It is the first time since 2015 the two squads have faced off. After leading 2-1 at halftime, the Buffs fell behind by giving up two consecutive goals in the second half, but ultimately scored near the end of the game resulting in a 3-3 draw.
The Buffaloes (10-4-3, 9-3-1 AAC) scored first just over five minutes into the contest when
Lucy Knowles set up
Diane Maillis for a shot that found the back net. It did not take the Grizzlies (8-5-5, 2-0 CAC) long to respond, as they scored a goal of their own less than two minutes later. Following the goal both teams went back and forth struggling to find opportunities to score, until Knowles connected with Maillis again for the Buffs second goal at the 17-minute mark. From there, despite the Grizzlies taking three more shot attempts than the Buffs, Milligan held the lead 2-1 heading into the second half. Overall, GGC outshot MU 9-2 in the half.
After the intermission, the Grizzlies scored goals at the 47th and 66th minute marks to take the lead. Milligan regained the momentum in the 74th minute when
Natalie Roper found
Destini Martinez for the equalizing goal. This proved to be vital, as the Buffs were unable to generate another scoring opportunity in the remaining 16 minutes. Georgia Gwinnett took multiple shots as time wound down but were unable to break the tie, resulting in a 3-3 draw.
Over the course of the match, the Buffs scored on four of their five shot attempts, while the Grizzlies finished with 21 shot attempts, with eight of those being on goal.
Kelsey Miller provided the fifth shot for Milligan in the contest that ended up on target but was saved by Georgia Gwinnett's goalie.
Emily Robinson played all 90 minutes and allowed three goals and made five saves in the match. With the draw, her record moves to 9-3-3 on the season.
Milligan will now host an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) tournament game, after finishing with the No. 3 seed in the conference. Their opponent will be the No. 6-seeded University of Pikeville (Ky.) Bears and time of kick-off is still to be decided for the Nov. 1 conference Quarterfinal.
