Buffs Women’s Soccer Unable to Convert Opportunities in Loss to Montreat

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. — The Milligan University women's soccer program traveled east to Montreat College (N.C.) for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) tussle on Wednesday evening. Milligan dominated play for much of the contest, hitting the goal post three times and the crossbar on another occasion, but dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 tilt to the hosting Cavaliers.

The Buffaloes now hold a 6-3-2 overall mark, with a 5-2-1 record in AAC contests.

Opening the contest, the Buffs claimed the vast majority of the possession, boasting a huge 10-3 shot advantage. Halle Steele had a particularly great chance, on which she had he first attempt saved and then smacked the ball off the goal post in the 17th minute. The score would remain tied at 0-0 with half to play.

The early stages of the second half were very similar, as Lauren Hawkley hit the post on a header attempt in the 48th minute to begin the barrage. Just a few minutes later, Katelyn Penner whacked the crossbar with a left-footed shot from the top of the box. Yet another shot off a Milligan free kick hit the post off the boot of Kara McDaniel in the 80th minute as the Buffaloes last legitimate chance to score. A defensive breakdown by the Buffs allowed the Cavs to poke a shot past Emily Robinson in the 84th minute to beat MU, 1-0.

Penner led the team in shots on frame, sending three out of her four shots taken toward goal. The other five shots on net came from McDaniel, Steele, Natalie Roper, Destini Martinez and Kelsey Miller.

It was generally a good night for Robinson between the pipes, but the late goal by Montreat marred her season record, which now stands at 6-3-2.

The Buffs will look to get back in the win column on Saturday, Oct. 11 in Columbia, S.C., as they face the current AAC No.2-seeded Rams of Columbia International University at 3 p.m.
