MILLIGAN, Tenn. -Â Milligan University's women's basketball team took care of business after a slow start on Wednesday night inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. Their matchup with the Rams of Bluefield University (Va.) ended with a 48-point win, 96-48.
The first quarter saw the Rams shoot the ball with great efficiency, scoring 20 points on an 8-of-16 clip with a 4-of-6 three-point conversion rate. Milligan scored 21 points to hold the lead at the conclusion of the period, but they struggled to consistently score, going just 1-of-7 from distance.
In the next frame, the Buffs surged ahead with a 27-7 scoring advantage over the 10-minute period. It was a stellar 11-of-17 mark from the field for MU, while Bluefield only had three field goals on 15 attempts. That built a substantial 47-28 lead for the Buffaloes at the intermission.
Another torrid offensive third quarter for Milligan equaled 25 points on a 10-of-20 shooting line. The Rams continued to struggle, making just five of their 13 field goals tries. The 25-11 edge in the quarter for MU made it a 72-39 lead with 10 minutes left to be played.
The fourth frame was an opportunity to get several players in, as
Dachelle Lucas made her season debut for the Buffs. Overall, Milligan continued to expand their advantage, scoring a 23-10 edge over the course of the period. At the buzzer, the Buffaloes notched a 96-48 win.
Six of Milligan's nine scorers nabbed at least 10 points, with
McKenna Myers leading the team with 16 on a 6-of-10 day form the field and a 3-of-6 mark from deep.
Makenzie Bremer scored 14 points, while both
Semaj Clark and
Kenzie Campbell poured in 12.
Lina Lyon and
Caroline Krueger rounded out that list with 10 apiece.
Clark's seven assists paced the squad, with
Naomi Atchley adding five to the team total. Both Campbell and Lyon doled out four assists apiece. Myers set up three baskets and both Bremer and Krueger passed out a pair.
Lexi Ervin and
Romy Bos had the two remaining assists to add up to 29 as a squad.
Atchley nearly had a double-double with 11 rebounds and eight points scored. Clark also was just a rebound shy of a double-double with nine. Myers, Krueger and Ervin rebounded five shots each, while Campbell and Lyon both supplied four. Bremer was next with three boards and Bos and
Nina Lovelace both had multiple backboards, with two.
Eight total steals were collected by Milligan, with Clark snatching four of those. Two came from Ervin and Myers and Lyon split the other two. Krueger rejected one shot in the contest.
Looking ahead, the Lady Buffs match up with Union Commonwealth University (Ky.) on Smith-Harris Court inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m., looking to win two straight games for the first time this season.
