Milligan Women's Volleyball Drops Pair of Matches in Straight Sets

MILLIGAN, Tenn. – On Saturday, the Milligan University women's volleyball continued hosting the Milligan Mountain Madness tournament inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. The Buffaloes were unable to take home a set on the day, as they fell in straight sets to both Shawnee State (Ohio) and Faulkner (Ala.).

After the season's opening weekend, Milligan holds an 0-4 win-loss record.

Game 1 – Shawnee State 3, Milligan 0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-21)

The Buffs roared out to a commanding 15-7 lead in the match's opening stanza. Then, however, the Bears combatted that stretch by notching a 15-4 run to go ahead by a 22-19 tally. Milligan could not recover, as they fell 25-21 to open the match.

Milligan started well in the second set, grabbing ahold of a 9-6 lead through the first 15 points. A 15-4 run by SSU for the second time in the match put the Buffs back 21-13 before a 25-18 finish.

The third set was all Shawnee State, as they raced out to a 10-4 advantage and never looked back. Milligan attempted to stage a comeback late, but was too far behind, falling 25-21 for their third loss of the season.

The offensive attack for MU was led by Shelby Miller, who put down seven of her 35 swings in the match. Taylor Brinn and Bella Devoti each contributed five kills to the effort, and Erin Littleton and Courtney Nye added four apiece. Faith Wilson had 14 assists and Kyndl Hodge supplied 12.

A total of 16 digs were tallied by Grace Sanderson, and Miller also had double-digits, with 12. Littleton and Nye each had four block assists to lead the team, while Miller had two and Riley Brinn and Addison Varney both had one.

Game 2 – Faulkner 3, Milligan 0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-21)

After falling behind 11-4 early, Milligan could not regain any ground, falling by an eventual seven-point margin of 25-18.

Milligan battled to a 16-15 deficit in the second tilt, but could not stay with the Eagles, who scored nine of the next 10 points to win 25-16 in the middle of three sets.

The last set was the most hotly contested of the match against Faulkner. The two sides traded points for the majority of the bout. The Buffs led 20-19, but once again were not able to keep their momentum going forward and allowed a 6-1 run over the last seven points of the match, falling 25-21.

Miller had her best match of the weekend in the final one, scoring 13 kills on 33 swings, while hitting at .242. Littleton and Devoti both had five putaways on a combined 27 swings. R. Brinn hit .286 with three kills. Wilson's 21 assists led the way, and both R. Brinn and Hodge had four.

Hodge had a team-best seven pickups, and the trio of Sanderson, Wilson and Miller provided five apiece. R. Brinn picked up four, as well. Varney had two block assists and both Miller and T. Brinn added one.

Miller was named Milligan's representative on the Milligan Mountain Madness All-Tournament Team.

The Buffaloes now look ahead to the University of Mobile Tournament on Aug. 29-30, where they will look to get off the schneid with a contest against the Dillard (La.) Bleu Devils at 2 p.m. and a 6 p.m. bout with the hosts, the University of Mobile (Ala.) Rams.
