BREVARD, N.C. – The No. 2 ranked Milligan University women's cross-country team traveled to Brevard, N.C. on Friday evening for the Brevard XC Classic hosted by Brevard College.
The women's team collected 121 total points for a fourth-place finish out of 14 teams. Milligan finished ahead of all Appalachian Athletic Conference opponents, and it is their second top-five finish in only two meets on the young season.
Freshman
Kerigan Lewis led the way in her first race as a Buff, posting a final time of 19:43.5 for a 13th place finish.
Abbie Page-Jones was not far behind her, crossing the line less than ten seconds later for a mark of 19:52.5 and 17th place.
"Kerigan ran a tough race for the ladies," said head coach
Chris Layne, "and it was really great to see Abbie notch her cross country debut - she really raced well today for the first one."
Isabelle Johnson (20:17.7 25th) and
McKenna Spaulding (20:41.7 30th) had nice starts to their seasons, posting their first official scores for the year.
Megan Haire (20:59.0 36th) and
Annie McDermott (20:59.3) were splitting hairs for the fifth and final counting time for the Buffs, as Haire's score counted finishing just tenths of a second ahead of McDermott.
Kendall Jarvis got her season off to a strong start, finishing in 38th place with a time of 21:04.6. Also posting her first official time and rounding out the competitors for Milligan was
Cami Vincent in 87th place at a pace of 23:59.9.
"For a lot of our folks on both sides this was a college debut or season opener," Layne concluded, "so it was a great opportunity to get a good read on where things stand."
Up next for the Buffaloes is the Eli Cramer Invitational, which they will host at Steele Creek Park in Bristol, Tenn. on Friday Sept. 26. The women will get started that evening at 5:30 p.m.
