Softball splits at the Cumberlands

WILLAMSBURG, K.Y. (March 6, 2018) â€" The Milligan College softball team continued their 2018 campaign on the road at the University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday. The Buffs split a doubleheader against the Patriots taking the first game 2-0 and dropping the second game 8-0.
 
Milligan moved to 3-7 while the Cumberlands moved to 3-9.
 
THIRD INNING DOMINATION | GAME ONE
The Buffs got their bats swinging earning three of their five total hits in the top of the third. After Kayla Baker and Erica Roller both stole bases, Jenna Gilbert singled through the shortstop hole sending Baker and Roller home to put Milligan in the lead for good. Despite the Patriots earning two more hits in comparison to the Buffs one, Milligan's defense remained strong and did not let up.
 
Senior pitcher Cayley Shoemaker allowed three hits in 5.1 innings while Kassi Butcher allowed one in 1.2 innings.
 
GAME TWO
The Cumberlands got out on top early in the bottom of the first with three runs scoring (four hits). With two and a half scoreless innings to follow, the Buffs earned two hits in comparison to the Patriots' zero. However, in the bottom of the fourth the Cumberlands recorded two hits and four more runs putting the Patriots at a seven run advantage. In the bottom of the sixth, the Cumberlands secured their split day against the Buffs with another run (8-0).
 
LEADERS FOR THE DAY
Kaylee Frascatore earned two hits while Gilbert tallied two RBI's and Rachel Coffey, Shoemaker, Baker and Butcher tallied one hit apiece.
 
For the Patriots, Morgan Santos led with two hits and two RBI's while Tara Comer also compiled two hits.
 
UP NEXT
The Buffs return home for their next four games, two doubleheaders, on Saturday, March 10, for an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup against Point University at 1 p.m. and on Sunday, March 11, against the University of the Cumberlands, also at 1 p.m.
