MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 11, 2018) â€" The Milligan College softball team bounced back on Wednesday afternoon with their sixth Appalachian Athletic Conference sweep of the season against Union College on Anglin Field. Milligan defeated Union in game one 4-1 and then again in game two by the eight-run rule 9-1.ÂÂ
The Buffs moved to 20-12, 13-5 in the AAC while the Bulldogs fell to 14-20, 12-6 in the AAC.
GAME ONE
Both teams went head to head in the first two innings with no runs and just one hit. However, in the bottom of the third the Buffs connected for their first two hits enabling Erica Roller to score the first run of the day. The Bulldogs tallied a hit of their own in the fourth but Milligan continued to hold them scoreless all the while swinging for four hits and touching home plate again to put them at a two-run advantage.
Union responded in the fifth inning with a run of their own in the fifth (2-1). The Buffs went on to secure their first win after freshman Morgan Overholser blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth.
GAME TWO
After three quick outs in the first for the Bulldogs, freshman Neelee Griffith stepped up to the plate sending a ball deep into right field to push Roller and Kirstan Beaver home (2-0). Despite an immediate double to center field by the Bulldogs in the second, Milligan's defense backed up by stellar pitching by Jaclyn Jenkins the Buffs held them scoreless. Nonetheless, the momentum from the first inning carried over as Milligan scored two more runs in the second and soon put the game out of reach with five earned runs in the third (9-0).ÂÂ
Union's Juli King homered over the left field fence in the fourth, but it proved not enough as the Buffs held the Bulldogs to just one run in order to claim their AAC sweep over Union College in five innings.
LEADERS | GAME ONE
Overholdser led with two RBI's alongside Griffith and Roller who earned two hits apiece. Savannah Nocera, Jenna Gilbert and Rachel Coffey all added a hit apiece. Kassi Butcher was given the win after pitching 4.1 innings allowing just three hits and one run while Jenkins earned the save allowing one hit in the final 2.2 innings.
LEADERS | GAME TWO
Roller tallied three RBI's while Griffith tallied two (2-for-3 effort). Beaver also went 2-for-3 and Coffey, Gilbert and Nocera added a hit apiece. Jenkins earned the win after five innings of pitching allowing just three hits and one run.
UP NEXT
The Buffs are back on the road for some more AAC play with a doubleheader at St. Andrews University on Saturday, April 14, starting at 1 p.m. and will return to Anglin Field on Monday, April 16, for another AAC match up against Reinhardt University at 3 p.m.
