Roper’s Strike Propels Milligan Women’s Soccer to Victory at Johnson

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — On Wednesday evening the Milligan University women's soccer squad traveled to Knoxville for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) bout against Johnson. The two sides were quite evenly matched, but the Buffs pulled through with an 67th-minute goal to take a 1-0 result.

With the victory Milligan now boasts a 5-2-2 record overall and a 4-1-1 record in AAC play.

The opening half of play was evenly matched, as the Buffs and Lions split ten total shots and shots on goal with five and four a piece. The Buffs slightly outpaced the competition regarding possession, earning five corners to just three for Johnson.

The beginning of the second half was much of the same. However, the tide turned in the middle of the second period after Halle Steele just missed a header over the goal, Natalie Roper broke the seal by scoring an unassisted goal to give the Buffs a 1-0 lead. Following the goal, Milligan controlled the pace leading to a six to three advantage in the shot department and a four to one advantage on corner kicks for the period. Johnson had an opportunity late but missed a shot wide to the right, as Milligan went on to secure the victory 1-0.

The Milligan attack was led by Lauren Hawkley who took two shots in the game with both being on frame. Natalie Roper was the most potent attacker for the squad, notching two shots, with one of them finishing on net. Halle Steele added two shots with one on net and Lucy Knowles, Kelsey Miller, and Katelyn Penner each added a shot, respectively.

Emily Robinson took care of business in the goal saving all five shots sent her way. It is Robinson's second consecutive shutout and moves her record to 5-2-2 on the season, as she looks to continue her momentum heading into the home stretch of the season.

After the victory, the Buffs have much to look forward to with a face off against Brenau University (Ga.) on Anglin Field this Saturday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.
