WISE, Va. - On Saturday afternoon the Milligan University women's tennis team traveled to Wise, Va. for a doubleheader against both Southern Virginia and UVA Wise. UVA Wise was the host of both matchups, as the games were played on their campus. Milligan won the first matchup of the afternoon with ease, cruising to a 7-0 victory over Southern Virginia, but they stumbled later in the day versus UVA Wise, losing 7-0. The split on the day moves the lady Buffs record to 2-1 overall this fall.
It was smooth sailing in the double's matchups for the lady Buffs against Southern Virginia. Leanne Endler and Mellisa Duarte picked up the first point of the day with a 6-1 triumph in the first contest. Following their victory, it was
Parker White and
Madison Berry with a clean sweep (6-0) in the second battle. In the final doubles matchup,
Laurel Rich and
Sarah Crouse handled business with a 6-3 victory, giving the lady Buffs all three doubles wins to secure the doubles point.
It was much of the same for Milligan in the singles matches versus Southern Virginia, as Duarte, White, Berry, Rich, and Crouse all won their matches handily.
In the second match against UVA Wise, Milligan did not have the same luck they did earlier in the day. Endler and Duarte put up a good fight in the first doubles matchup, but eventually fell 4-6. White and Berry were competitive in the second set but also lost in the in the end, 6-2. UVA Wise swept the final contest to earn all three doubles bouts and the point.
Endler and Duarte each tied through two sets in their singles matches but were unable to pull out victories in their tiebreaks. White retired in the third singles match and Rich was unable to score in any of her sets. Crouse was the last chance for the lady Buffs to get a point but she could not take a game from her opponent.
Milligan will host Montreat (N.C.) at the Mathis Tennis Center Saturday Oct. 25, at 3 p.m. This matchup on Homecoming weekend will help prepare them for the UTR National Singles Tournament in Rome, Ga. the final event for Milligan in the fall season.
