MILLIGAN, Tenn. – On Wednesday evening at Anglin Field, the Milligan University women's soccer team spent their Senior Night battling against the Bluefield University Rams. In the end, the Buffs came out victorious with an outrageous 9-0 triumph over the visitors.
Milligan is now 4-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC).
The Buffalo stampede started right after the opening kickoff, as Milligan took control of the ball early and seldomly relinquished possession for the rest of the game. Bluefield's goalie was able to save two of the Buffs' early opportunities, but
Halle Steele scored her seventh goal of the season off an assist from
McKenna Rook in the 20th minute to give Milligan a 1-0 lead. Six minutes later,
Natalie Roper received a goal kick from the Rams and drove the ball down the field herself to score an unassisted goal, making the score 2-0. At the end of the half, Roper sent a cross into the box, and
Diane Maillis deked the Bluefield defenders by letting the pass continue to
Lauren Hawkley, who capitalized with a goal, giving both Roper and Maillis an assist and extending the lead to 3-0 heading into the intermission.
The floodgates burst open in the second half, as six goals were scored by the Buffs in the stanza. Hawkley tallied her second goal of the game to start the onslaught. Then,
Nikki Shirley scored her first goal of the season on a header following a Hawkley corner kick. Next, it was
Kelsey Miller and Rook who put the ball into the net with assists from
Destini Martinez and
Kylie Malone. The penultimate goal came thanks to a senior to senior connection, as
Mia Brown traded in her goalie kit to play forward and found
Katelyn Penner for a goal.
Nora Pugh capped things off with a goal in 87th minute to make the final score 9-0.
A grand total of 57 shots were taken by Milligan, while 31 of those were shots on net. In comparison, Bluefield took just two shots in the tilt.
Emily Robinson spent 90 minutes between the pipes and her record moves to 4-2-2 with the shutout victory.
The Buffs have a quick turnaround, facing Truett McConnell Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. back on Anglin Field.
