GREENWOOD, Ind. – The Milligan University tennis teams had six student-athletes selected as Academic All-District honorees by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Tuesday. CSC's Academic All-District program recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance on the tennis court and in the classroom. To be eligible for the award, voted on by Athletic Communications professionals, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.50 GPA or higher and must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution. They also must have competed in 75% of their team's competitions that include team scores for the year.
Milligan had three men's and two women's honorees. Junior
Gonzaga Lafarga, sophomore
Michal Curlej and junior
Phil Schollhorn were tabbed to the men's Academic All-District Team. For the women, sophomore
Laurel Rich and senior
Tara Stewart earned the plaudits.
Lafarga was a huge part of the men's team's success this season, manning the No. 1 singles spot to the tune of a 9-4 record. He currently sports a 3.98 GPA in the engineering program at Milligan.
Curlej has been another model of consistency in the classroom with a 3.95 GPA in his second year at Milligan. He had a strong stat line this season that included a 10-4 win-loss record in the No. 2 spot in singles.
Schollhorn played at least one match in the No. 2-No. 5 slots this season, combining for a 6-9 record, but finishing 4-8 in the No. 3 spot. He has a 3.87 GPA so far in his time with the Buffs.
Rich played in all 17 matches in singles this season, spending most of her time in the No. 6 slot with a 5-8 record. She was 2-1 in the No. 5 position and 0-1 in the No. 4 to finish 7-10 for the year. She sports a 3.94 GPA in the Exercise Science major.
Stewart graduated with her undergraduate degree in Graphic Design with a 3.66 GPA and finished the year 9-7 in singles. She went 4-3 in the No. 2 slot, 3-4 in the No. 3 post and 2-0 in the No. 4 position.
