Coffey homer, scoring frenzy help Buffs sweep Montreat

MONTREAT, N.C. (March 22, 2018) â€" A three-run homer from Rachel Coffey backed by another complete game shutout from Kassi Butcher in game one, followed by a scoring frenzy in game two, helped the Milligan College softball team win its fifth straight by defeating Montreat College twice, 3-0 and 10-1, Thursday evening on the road.

Coffey hit her second home run of the season while Butcher threw her fifth complete game and third shutout. Coffey's homer came in the top of the first inning with two out and proved to be all the scoring the Buffs would need.

In game two, Jaclyn Jenkins surrendered a run in the bottom of the first but settled in to keep Montreat scoreless over the next three frames. Meanwhile, Milligan (8-8, 3-3 AAC) took the lead for good in the top of the second. Kaylee Frascatore scored the tying run when she was brought home on an RBI triple by Morgan Overholser, then Overholser scored the go-ahead run on a Kirstan Beaver RBI single.

Brianna Snyder closed out the final inning after a Kayla Baker steal of home plate put the eight-run rule into effect in the top of the fifth.

Up next, the Buffs have a quick turnaround returning to Anglin Field for another Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader against Columbia College Friday, March 23, at 2 p.m. and are back on the road Sunday, March 25, for a nonconference doubleheader against King University at 1 p.m.
