MILLIGAN, Tenn. – Milligan University's women's soccer team took to Anglin Field on Wednesday evening for a matchup with the Bryan College (Tenn.) Lions. The Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contest was a one-sided affair, as the Buffaloes scored a huge five-goal victory over the visitors.
The Buffs' first half scoring consisted of two tallies within a minute-and-a-half of each other. In the 26th minute, Natalie Roper curled a shot into the bottom-left corner of the net off an assist by Katelyn Penner to give Milligan a 1-0 lead. Then, in the 27th minute, Destini Martinez smashed a laser into the top-right corner of the net off a great feed from Roper to double the MU lead at 2-0. That is where the score would remain until half time, as the Buffs held a 15-0 shot advantage in the opening period.
Early on in the second half, Milligan extended their edge, as Halle Steele scored goal number six for her season off a Martinez assist. That 50th-minute tally would be followed by a 53rd-minute goal by the Lions, which was the squad's first goal of the season. The Buffaloes took that personally, scoring three more times across the final 10 minutes of the contest. Diane Maillis scored her first goal as a Buffalo in the 80th minute, followed by Alara Tyrer deflecting a shot by Penner past the keeper in the 82nd. Lastly, Bianca Vacirca got in on the action with a strike into the net on a setup by Lauren Hawkley, making it 6-1 at the final whistle. A 19-4 advantage in the shot department was totaled by MU in the second half.
In totality, shots on net were 17-4 in the Buffs' favor, as 10 came in the first half and seven in the second for Milligan. Steele had four shots on net, and Roper and Penner followed her with three. Maillis had a pair on frame, and the group of Vacirca, Tyrer, Martinez, Hawkley and Kelsey Miller had one each.
In net, Emily Robinson recorded a three-save night, though she did allow one goal to pass. All three saves and the goal came in the second half. With the win, she sports a 3-2-2 overall record on the season.
Next on the schedule for the Buffs is a battle at Columbia College (S.C.), where Milligan will go toe-to-toe with the Koalas at 1 p.m. on Sept. 20.
