OOLTEWAH, Tenn. – The Milligan University men's golf team spent Monday and Tuesday competing in the Bryan Fall Invitational hosted at The Ooltewah Club by Bryan College. On Monday they played 36 holes and on Tuesday they played another 18. After 54 holes, the Buffs finished a stroke ahead of fourth place, placing third out of the 11 teams in attendance.
Francisco de Bethencourt had an impressive start to the tournament in Monday's opening round, as he played the back nine three under to finish two under the par of 71 with a 69. In the second round on Monday, he finished with a 74 to remain just one stroke over par going into the third and final round. He returned to the course on Tuesday in the top half of leaderboard and was three under going into the fifteenth hole, but stumbled with a double and triple bogey to finish with a 73, and ultimately place in a tie for fifth. His performance throughout the two-day tournament granted him a spot on the All-Tournament team.
Manuel Gutierrez's 71 in the final round helped lead the Buffs on Tuesday to the third-place finish. Previously, he had posted scores of +8 and +2. Overall, his +10 total through the three rounds earned him a 17th-place finish.
Freshman
Evan Caldwell was consistent throughout his three rounds for the Buffs. He tied for 21st with a cumulative score of 15-over-par. He started his event with a 76 and 74 on the first day and finished with a 78.
Hjalmar Liljenberg finished in 29th with an 18-over-par total of 231 strokes. He shot a 76 and 77 in the first two rounds of the tournament and finished the third round by shooting a 78.
Freshman
Aidan Sinclair had an impressing opening round on Monday, as he played the back nine even and finished only one over course par. In the second and third rounds he finished with a 76 and 81 for a total score of 16-over-par and a 25th-place finish.
The team closed the event at +28, thirteen strokes behind William Carey for second place. Milligan was ever so consistent, shooting +9 in round one, +13 in round two, and +16 in round three.
Following two weeks off, the Buffaloes will head to the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Fall Preview Championship, hosted at the Barnsley Resort and Golf Club in Adairsville, Ga. on Oct. 27th and 28th. This event will close out the fall season for MU.
