GREER, S.C. – On Monday and Tuesday, the Milligan University men's golf team competed as part of the Upstate Fall Invitational in Greer, S.C., where a field of mostly NCAA Division II opponents greeted the Buffs. After 36 holes, the Buffaloes came up just a single stroke short of the top spot in the tourney, placing second out of nine teams in attendance.
Freshman standout
Evan Caldwell closed Monday's first round with a two-shot lead in the individual standings as the only player to shoot a sub-70 first round at 68 strokes. He returned to the course on Tuesday and shot a 76, as he fell a pair of spots down to a tie for third place at +4 overall. He took a total of 144 strokes for the tournament.
Manuel Gutierrez's 71 in round one was followed by a 75 in the second set of 18 holes on Tuesday. He tied for eighth, having posted a +6 score of 146.
Another freshman,
Aidan Sinclair, was the third Buff to close out his event. He tied for 16
th with a cumulative score of 149 strokes. He started his event with a 77 in the first round and improved that by five shots in the second round at 72.
Francisco de Bethencourt and
Hugo Lundberg tied for 22
nd with 10-over-par scores of 150 strokes. For de Bethencourt, it was a consistent pair of rounds at 76 and 74, while Lundberg shot 80 in the first round and tied for the tourney's second-best score in round two at 70 strokes.
The team closed the event at +23, just a stroke back of the North Greenville - B squad for the tournament title. Milligan was ever so consistent, shooting 292 in round one and a tournament-best 291 in the second round.
Following a week off, the Buffaloes will head to the Ooltewah/Bryan Fall Invitational, hosted by Bryan College at the Ooltewah Club in Ooltewah, Tenn. on Oct. 13-14.
