JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — The Milligan University men's and (RV) women's golf squads hosted their annual Northeast Tennessee Spring Shootout tournament at Johnson City Country Club on Tuesday. The Buffaloes' men placed in the _ spot in the tourney, while the women took home the title for the fourth year in a row. In the end, MU claimed both the men's and women's medalist honors, with
Aidan Sinclair and
Bailey McGaha grabbing the plaudits.
On the men's side of things, Sinclair led the charge, totaling a first-round score of 74 strokes, which is two over the course par. He came back in round two with stellar play, posting a 69, as the only score under 70, to take home top honors for the squad.
Francisco de Bethencourt was next for Milligan, scoring a T-15th finish. He shot a 73, just one over par, on the first 18 holes. That was followed up by a 78 in round two to conclude the event, which dropped him down the leaderboard a bit.
For
Evan Caldwell, it was a better second round than first, as he came into the clubhouse with a 78 after 18. Then, he rattled off a score of 75 in the latter round to finish T-20th in the tournament.
Hjalmar Liljenberg (T-38th; 78, 80) and
Manuel Gutierrez (44th; 82, 80) rounded out the 'A' team's day as their final two finishers.
Mason Wilson (T-38th; 77, 81),
Hugo Lundberg (T-38th; 76, 82),
Caden Richardson (54th; 89, 79) and
Benji Conner (59th; 91, 86) combined to make up the 'B' team's result for the Buffs.
The Buffaloes' men placed in a tie for fourth place out of 11 teams, scoring consistent rounds of 303 and 302 on the afternoon to finish 29 over the course par as a squad.
For the women, McGaha raced away from the competition to earn medalist honors with a five-over-par first round, coupled with a tournament-best 73 in the second round to win the tourney by seven strokes.
Mallory TeVrucht, shooting a 77 in round one to tie for second, looked poised to make a run for the event title. However, she shot 11 over par in the later round to place fifth and earn All-Tourney honors.
Catalina Easley (T-6th; 80, 83),
Tessa Wilck (T-8th; 84, 80) and
Madison Butler (T-8th; 81, 83) also concluded their pursuits in the top 10 of the field.
Layla Fox (87, 87) and
Skye Perdue (89, 86) finished in 19th and 20th, respectively, while
Christa Woodard placed in a tie for 24th with rounds of 91 and 89.
Milligan averaged 317 strokes per 18 holes as a team, as they came away with rounds of 315 and 319 to earn the top team placement by 35 strokes over any competitor.
The two squads will be heading to Nashville, Tenn. next weekend and play at the Music City Classic prior to the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Championships the next two weekends.
